39th Istanbul Film Festival Awards

39th İstanbul Film Festival announced the winners of the International Competition and National Documentary Competition on 20 October.

Twelve narrative feature and eleven documentary films compete on 39th İstanbul Film Festival. Due to the pandemic, films were screened in different movie theatres as well as on the festival’s online screening platform.


International Competition


Twelve narrative films competed in this year’s International Competition. The Golden Tulip was awarded to “Atlantis” directed by Valentyn Vasyanovych. "Atlantis" has distinguished itself from the other films competing in this category with its extraordinary cinematography and intense narrative.



Best Film: Atlantis, Valentyn Vasyanovych

Special Jury Prize: Window Boy Would Also Like to Have a Submarine, Alex Piperno

Special Mention: Camila Morrone (actress, Mickey and the Bear)

Audience Award: Son-Mother, Mahnaz Mohammadi


National Documentary Competition


Eleven documentaries competed in this year’s National Documentary Competition. The Best Documentary Award was given to “Maddenin Halleri” (Phases of Matter) by Deniz Tortum. Tortum pushed the limits of documentary film and created a quite stroll between lines of life and dead. This experimental work draws attention with its minimalistic approach and visual aesthetics.

Special Mention: Mimaroğlu / Mimaroglu / The Robinson of Manhattan Island, Serdan Kökçeoğlu
